Heart-healthy-snacks are snacks we all know instinctively. Low sodium, low fat and a bunch of other low whatevers. Plenty fruit and vegetables and other high fiber foods. Today there are a lot better alternatives than in the past. Things that are sugar free, low sodium and low in whatevers. Tofu has crept into our snacks, fruit smoothies are popular as well as trail mixes which have really improved. Soy milk, 1%, 2% and no fat milk. Dark chocolate is an anti-oxidant and there are chocolate that is low in sugar and trans-fat.
Freezing grapes is a popular snack as well as dried fruit: apples, bananas,pears and raisins. Frozen yogurt, 1% cottage cheese with frozen strawberries, blueberries or raspberries.There is flavored water for those who don't care for plain water. One piece of advise is not to have anything in the house you don't want your kids or yourself to eat. This way the choice is between two snacks both healthy.

We know all these things but somehow we need to be coaxed into eating them. Why? well, there are a lot more enjoyable things out there. And more readily available. Not to mention all the bad habits we learned as we were growing up. Habits we now need to break, and help our children learn the good habits.
